OK! So I painted a small table with a mix of Slate and Light Cream Old Fashioned Milk Paint WITHOUT the Extra-Bond primer. The product directions recommend using the Extra-Bond primer when painting over anything but unfinished wood. I wanted to experiment to see what would happen without the bonding agent. I LOVED the result! It gives a very nice old “chippy” look.
So….I needed to know how the paint reacted with the Extra-Bond mixed in (per product directions). By using the Extra-Bond you get a much more “finished” look. With the Extra-Bond, you are more in control of the distressing effect. Without the Extra-Bond, the paint is in control.
This piece was painted with the Extra-Bond mixed in. |
I am in LOVE with this paint. It is extremely versatile and very cost effective.
The paint comes in powder form and is mixed with equal parts water. $11.99 to mix one pint of paint, the extra bond is an additional $10.99 for a pint, but goes twice as far. It’s a 2:1 ratio, 2 parts paint to 1 part extra bond. So 1 pint of extra bond will make 2 pints or 1 quart of paint. The Extra-Bond is also water based, non-toxic, hypo-allergenic, low odor and VOC-free. Completely soap and water clean up. The paint is also VOC-free and soap and water clean up as well.
At first I was a bit intimidated. It seemed like a lot of room for error.
Don’t be intimidated!
Just get out your measuring spoons and measure as though you were cooking. Mix equal parts of powdered pigment paint and water. If you choose to add the Extra-Bond, it’s 2:1 ratio (ex. 2T powder paint, 2T water and 1T Extra-Bond).
I was also intimidated because I found a lot of information on how to use the product to paint unfinished wood, but not a lot of info on how to paint pre-finished wood.
So I decided to take the plunge and give it a try. I am SO glad I did. I love the chippy look that you can achieve with this paint. I have not been able to get this look with any other paint.
This is a bench that I painted WITHOUT the Extra-Bond.
Here is a picture of the before. I did not sand or prime this piece. I simply washed it with TSP-PF and then painted it with Old Fashioned Milk Paint.
Then I recovered it with a grain sack from Columbus, OH. The faded grain sack works perfectly with the chippy Old Fashioned Milk Paint.
I thought this piece needed something a little more refined. So I sanded the top so I could stain it and painted the body with Slate Old Fashioned Milk Paint WITH the Extra-Bond added. I did NOT sand or prime this piece. I simply cleaned it with TSP-PF and then painted. It took ONE coat of paint. Then I painted the details with one coat of Light Cream OFMP (I did NOT mix in the Extra-Bond with this; it’s only needed in the first coat). I lightly sanded by hand and then waxed the entire piece with a natural colored wax. The entire project took LESS than 3 hours from start to finish. I think the results are FABULOUS….What do you think?
Quick, easy and FANTASTIC results that are VERY cost effective. For each of the pieces above I used 4T of powder paint pigment, which means I have a ton left for additional products!
I hope you found this post informative and helpful. I promise…you will LOVE OFMP! If you don’t, the company guarantees your money back! Make sure to visit their website, they have a ton of instructions for mixing, background info, how to apply, etc. It’s a very helpful website for most of your questions. The thing I couldn’t find was different painting techniques. I plan to experiment some more, so check back for new techniques.
Ciao for now!

13 years agoI really found this post so useful. I have used the OFMP before but always with the extra bond. I love the chippy look so much more but had just never found a piece of unfinished wood to try it on. (I'm not a huge fan of sanding). Now that I know I can get such a chippy look on any finish of wood I'm just looking for things in my home to pain.t

13 years agoHi Jenine! Glad you liked the post. Just a little note…The chippy look won't work on UNFINISHED wood. It only works on old pre-finished pieces. I think that's what you meant…but just wanted to clarify. Also…please note it's a guessing game what you get for the end result, but to me, that is half the fun! The surprise at the end. I have done this several times and always get a different look in the end. It really depends on the piece and what type of finish it has had over the years. I would still wash with the TSP just to be sure! Then paint away…Good luck. If you get a piece painted, please post it to our facebook page. I would LOVE to see it!

12 years agoThank you for info about Old Fashioned Milk Paint. I have some for a project and had never used that kind of paint before. I do have the Extra Bond because it seemed to be necessary. Excited to try this paint out soon!

11 years agohi, where do you find the wax to finish it?

11 years agoI apologize. I am not sure how I missed this comment. There are several waxes you can use. 2 of my favorites are Liberon (www.rockler.com) or American Paint Company Clear (www.AmericanPaintCompany.com) Hope this helps.
