Trumeau Inspired Mirror and Repurposed Sewing Table

Well it is officially August and summer is coming to a close.  We spent most of the month of July on the road visiting family on both sides.  Needless to say, this is why I haven’t posted in a while.  Not to mention we had windows put in, our garbage disposer and washer crap out! So as much as I have enjoyed reconnecting with family and seeing people I have not seen in over 25 years, I am ready to get to the laundry list of projects that are in my garage. And I am done with the appliance projects…enough is enough!  Last Thursday, I was finally able to finish a mirror and sewing machine cabinet.  The mirror has been primed and ready for paint for over 3 months now and the table got a coat of paint several weeks back but was still waiting for the finishing touches. 

Pay no attention to that date…I forgot to set the date, or better yet TURN it OFF!

The mirror was straight from the Goodwill in it’s lovely 80’s finish.  Loved the lines of the mirror, but the brown speckled finish HAD to go!  (Please excuse the messy garage…I guess this shows what our work area looks like…embarrassing, but hard core facts!)  I also felt the open area at the top needed something.  So I used Delta’s texture magic texture paint to give it the look of a carved wood embellishment (I’ll post a tutorial later on this). I could have used an actual pressed wood carving, but I had this at the house already. 

Now, I have to give credit where credit is due…I happened across Miss Mustard Seed’s Blog about 8 months ago.  I was searching for mirrors at the time for my home.  Her trumeau mirror came up.  While I fell in love with it…it wouldn’t work for my space.  So when I found this one…her mirror flashed back to me and I knew it was the perfect finish for this mirror!  Similar, but not the same. I hope she doesn’t mind?  Thanks for the inspiration Miss Mustard Seed.

I simply primed it with Kilz (it’s what I had on hand, any primer would do), painted it with an off white eggshell paint and a soft blue for accent.  Both colors were miss mix tints from Lowes so I don’t know the actual colors. The blue and white is the same blue and white I used on my beachy night stand make-over.  Once painted and dried, I distressed it and waxed it with Minwax Special Dark.

The sewing table was actually in really good shape.  It was Grandma D’s!  This is one of my best friends Grandma.  She passed away about a year ago.  God bless her.  Needless to say, neither her cousin or my friend had room for it…so it became mine.  We gutted it and screwed the top and the front shut to convert it to a entry table, end table or night stand.  I think it looks great with the mirror as an entry table.  Hopefully Grandma D approves!

I painted this in the same paint as the mirror and used the same distressing and waxing technique.  We did change out the handles to update it just a bit.  However…I do love the old ones.  So much we re-purposed them on the french end table .

I really love these two pieces together.  I hope someone else does too.  I think it would be a shame to separate them.

This past weekend we purchased 4 oak chairs from Craiglist.  I am so excited as these will be added to 4 chairs I already have for the dining room.  I can’t wait to get started on them!
